The Pittsburgh Black Media Federation is seeking your participation in a highly competitive training program for minority high school students. Nationally, because less than 11 percent of professional journalists are black and many good students show a reluctance to enter the field, a strong need exists for such a workshop.
Members of the Pittsburgh Black Media Federation, who work for the New Pittsburgh Courier, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, WTAE, WPXI, WQED, KDKA, KQV, WAMO, WPGH and others, have decided to devote their time to the workshop as instructors. Point Park University, Downtown, is the site of the seven-day residential program, and many businesses and community organizations donate time, money and effort to ensure the success of the workshop.
The program, free to the student, is designed to encourage high school youths to enter the profession of journalism. Students will meet with instructors, all of whom are employed in the media, for a week of rigorous training in meeting deadlines, producing and editing a paper and producing and delivering a television and radio news program.

Who's Eligible?
30 students from the public and private high schools throughout the nation, though preference is given to Pittsburgh area students.
Workshop Dates
Saturday, July 31, 2010 through Saturday, August 8, 2010
The Focus
To explore journalism careers through practical exercises in basic news, feature writing, copy editing, interviewing and news gathering, and, for interested students, sessions in photography and broadcasting.
The Staff
Professional media representatives from a spectrum of the Pittsburgh media.
Requirements
A command of the English language and an interest or avid curiosity in exploring journalism as a career. You must be able to live on campus for the entire workshop. Students will be chaperoned at all times.
